Early in March we got a freak ice storm. There were a few of inches of snow and ice built up on the road, but for some reason I still went into work! Β It was probably the most snow I have ever driven in and I’m still not sure how I made it there in one piece. Only one other person came in though so I only stayed a few hours.

Β I work close to this really cool old cemetery, and as I was leaving work, I got the wild idea to stop and take pictures. I usually chicken out when it comes to doing things like that by myself, but I decided it was time to get over that. I did get a little bit weirded out for a minutes because someone was behind me and I felt odd about pulling into the cemetery with someone behind me. (I don’t know!) So I drove right past, I almost went home but then I realized I was being dumb and turned around and went back! (After the other car had passed me of course!)

I’m glad I did, it was a lot of fun. The only downside is that the zipper on my snow boots had broke so my only option was to wear my suede ones. Which is fine for walking short distances, but after about three minutes they were completely soaked and filled with water.Β

The only bad part about the day is when I broke my camera. :'( Β I was rushing inside because my feet had gone numb from being soaked in ice water and the lens hit the door. Booo.

  1. oh my gosh. these pictures are incredible! you are so good at this. these are some of the best cemetery pictures i've seen in a long time and the best photographs i've seen for a while. i can't quite pinpoint why exactly, if its the colors contrasting on the snow and the pretty trees or what. but they're seriously good.
i hear you when you say that you almost didn't do this and totally understand the long process it took just to go to the cemetery, (goodness, that sounds exactly like me, i even have a hard time taking sunset pictures sometimes. it sounds stupid but its so hard sometimes)
thank you so much for taking these and sharing them!!!

  2. These photographs are so lovely – the way they capture the ice and snow on the trees and the colour, and feel are just great. I wish I'd taken the time to photograph an old Victorian graveyard in my home town which use to be all run down and over run with ivy and trees – i'm sure it would have made for some very atmospheric photographs!

  3. Wow thank you so much! Yes, going specific places to take pictures by myself seems like something that should be easy to do, but I always have to really psych myself up to doing it! I'm glad you really like the photos πŸ™‚

  4. Just gorgeous! I always had a weird fascination with graveyards as a kid! i thought they were so cool and peaceful!
The snow just makes them that–even more!
here is my LSP cosplay btw! It's a few months' older, but I really liked the way it came together! πŸ™‚

  5. That cemetery is really seriously amazing but you've captured something no one would've ever seen had you not stopped to take pictures In An Ice Storm!!! You got some great shots. There is a peaceful beauty in each photo that just reminds me of how incredible life is! I'm bewildered by the juxtaposition of the daffodils, frozen on the brink of blooming and coming to life and surrounded by the all the icy cold marble headstones representing death.
Glad you had the hutzpah to go there and trudge around in the freezy windy cold. Sometimes you just have to psych yourself up! Sorry about your lens though
